How does it work?

All pieces in our stores are purchased from our customers and community. We offer a service where you can sell your pre-loved clothing and accessories for cash or store credit.

1. Prepare your items

Read through our selling guidelines and prepare the items you wish to sell.

2. Choose your store

Choose the store you wish to visit and walk-in or book an appointment (recommended for first-time sellers). We also offer a sell-by-post service.

3. Hand us your pieces

We’ll sort through your pieces and select the items we know our customers will love. We’ll then research and price the items. This price will be our resale price.

4. Choose cash/store credit

Take 30% of the total value of your items as cash (paid direct deposit) or 50% as store credit.

*First time sellers will need to show a piece of valid photo ID and provide an email and phone number. If you choose to take cash you will also need your BSB and Account Number on hand.

We have broad guidelines, but we prioritise clothing, shoes and accessories that are:

In-Season

We buy for the next 2 weeks weather-wise and aim to have styles you want to buy and wear now. The items we buy are processed and head straight onto the shop floor for sale within hours. We don’t store items and our stock generally has a short shelf-life.

Natural Fabrics & Fibres

We prioritise well-made items of fabrics like cotton, silk, linen and wool, because their lifecycle is significantly longer. When they do come to the end of their life, they are more easily recycled, repurposed or re-engineered.

Local, ethical & sustainable brands & designers

We’re in the business of sustainability, so we love to champion brands with a conscious production method, as well as locally made Melbourne, Australian and New Zealand brands

Broken, dirty or damaged items

Nobody wants to browse damaged or dirty pieces, so we encourage you to stain remove and wash your pieces before you bring them in. We sometimes buy pieces that have been well mended.

Office or Corporate Wear

These styles just aren't quite right for us and our customers base, and doesn’t sell in our stores. If you’re looking to rehome corporate clothing and suits we recommend trying Fitted For Work.

Formal Wear

Traditional formal wear like ball gowns and tuxedos aren’t quite right for us but we have plenty of less traditional party dresses and outfits for a special occasion.

Fast Fashion

It’s a matter of quality, ethics and sustainability. Most fast fashion is not made well and is often made of synthetics that are harder to recycle at the end of their life. Fast fashion also generally has a low price point so therefore the resale value is low.

Counterfeit or ‘faux’ pieces

Prepare your items to sell

We ask that all items are freshly laundered and free from stains, holes, odour and pet hair. Please wipe down shoes and accessories and check all pockets. If you’re after some laundry tips there are some very useful highlights on our Instagram!

Fold and place your items in a reusable bag. There is no need to iron or steam your items (we’ll do this). We ask that you leave any coat hangers at home.

Selling FAQs

How do you price my items?

Your pieces will be priced by a trained Mutual Muse buyer. Our buyers are constantly learning and we are constantly updating our in-house training . The world of fashion is broad and ever-changing so we use multiple resources to help us price our stock. We are always conscious of trends, quality, desirability and condition.

How and when will I get paid?

We buy outright so you will receive your store credit instantly and your cash(direct deposit) within a few days of selling to us.

How do I know what you will buy?

You won’t know for sure until we’ve finished looking through your items. If you have lots of pieces or it’s your first time selling we recommend bringing in a small bag so you can see how we work! Our buyers are always happy to talk you through what we would like to take and why. It’s important to remember that we can’t buy everything but we are able to recommend other like minded businesses.

How long will it take you to look at my items?

We’re quick and generally take about 20 mins per person. We may take a little longer if you have lots of items or pieces that need more research. When you sign in, one of our buyers will give you an estimated wait time. We never keep your items overnight and ask that you collect on the same day that you drop off.

If you’re visiting on a weekend we recommend booking an appointment as Saturdays and Sundays are busy.

Can I bring in just one or two things?

Yes! There is no minimum amount of pieces to sell to us.

Does store credit expire?

Our store credit does not expire and you can use it at any Mutual Muse store or when shopping online.

Why do you need my photo ID?

This is a legal requirement when dealing in second hand goods. We will only ask to see your photo ID the first time you sell to us.
