This edition of Mutual’s Muses features Tara-Lee Mitchell - the woman behind Mitch Salon and a long-time shopper of Mutual. A hairdresser for over 20 years, Tara is known for creating cool, effortless hair while quietly leading the way when it comes to sustainability in the salon space.
From opening her own salons with eco values front of mind, to hunting down the best second-hand fashion finds and balancing life as a mum, Tara brings a refreshingly real energy to everything she does. Thoughtful, design-focused, and always practical, she’s proof that great style doesn’t have to be wasteful.
Read on to get to know Tara a little better.

MM: Hi Tara! Tell us a little about your journey into hairdressing.
TLM: I started my apprenticeship in Auckland when I was 16 years old. I struggled with some bullying at school and always wanted to become a hairdresser. I’m still friends with one of my co-workers Mel to this day!
MM: What does a typical day look like for you?
TLM: Wake up groggy (not a morning person) Have breakfast with my son Sid. Drop him at daycare. Maybe try and exercise? Head to one of the salons. Finish work and pick up Sid. Night time routine and once he is in bed we have dinner and put on one of our shows, maybe with a glass of wine!
MM: Sustainability is a big part of Mitch’s core values. Can you tell us more about your eco-mindset and how that shows up in the salon?
TLM: I have been hairdressing for over 20 years and worked in many top salons. The amount of waste is insane. I instantly knew that when I opened my own salon that would be the first thing I changed, so we partnered with sustainable salons that recycle up to 98% of wastage. We also use Davines colour and products. It’s an Italian brand that is at the forefront of sustainability!

MM: How would you describe the aesthetic of Mitch?
TLM: Cool hair! Effortless. Design focused.
MM: What’s your current favourite budget-friendly hair tool?
TLM: The purple Lady Jayne detangling brush. We use it at the basins in both salons and I have a small one for my handbag.
MM: How do you find joy in getting dressed for work in an environment that’s notoriously messy?
TLM: Honestly? I wear all of my beautiful clothes to work. I don’t go out as much anymore, and love feeling good at work! I’m a pretty tidy colourist but still sometimes ruin clothing. I still wear them! Also, just wear gloves and an apron.
MM: What’s one small tip for readers to lead to a more sustainable haircare routine?
TLM: Stop buying more stuff that’s trending and use what you’ve got. Then start again and keep it simple!

MM: If two brands had a baby and that baby represented your style, which brands would they be?
TLM: Acne studios and Deering - Both brands I love! Acne is a brand I often try and find second hand as it’s such good quality, especially the knits. I have a bomber jacket I got 10 years ago that I still wear.
MM: On days when your mood is low, what’s your go-to outfit?
TLM: White tee, great pair of jeans, little sandals, a designer handbag (bought second hand of course) and some great sunglasses. Also GLOWING SKIN!
MM: What’s been your greatest second-hand find?
TLM: A raffia Fendi baguette. It’s my prized possession and I use it all summer. There is one on Vestiere currently for $4500 and I didn’t pay anywhere near that. I love a bargain.
MM: If you had to choose one song to describe your style, what would it be?
TLM: Who’s that girl by Eve haha

MM: What’s the oldest item in your wardrobe, and why have you held onto it for so long?
TLM: I’m someone who wardrobe cleanses a lot! But, I do have a pounamu bangle that was my late grandmothers. I wear it everyday. It reminds me of her and our Māori heritage.
MM: And finally, who or what in your community is inspiring your work right now?
TLM: My team at Mitch inspire me every day! I’m so lucky to work with such talented hairdressers. I’m also the oldest one here so they keep me cool and hip haha
